This low maintenance perennial takes on a small shrub appearance which brightens every garden. Small bright creamy flowers against dark green foliage are one of the first of the growing season to bloom and provide a nectar source. The genus Baptisia are legumes which can aid in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. They are also a host plant for 5 species of moths and butterflies (NWF). When the blooms are finished the seed pods turn almost black and rattle when shaken or brushed. The seeds continue winter interest and are a food source for songbirds.
