Blooms are small with separate male and female flowers on the same plant. Nuts can be roasted or ground for flour, they are also easy to harvest. For best pollination and nut production it is best to have more than one plant in close proximity. This shrub has high wildlife value to songbirds, gamebirds, deer and small mammals. It is also a host plant for 106 (NWF) different species of moths and butterflies and will attract birds. Use in a hedge boarder or screening, native landscape or back border. Fall colors are orange to yellow. American Hazelnut is drought and Juglone tolerant. Black Walnut is known to emit Juglone into the soil that can inhibit other plant growth.
