Salex is a very important host plant for many beneficial insects which will attract many songbirds. Being smaller than other species in its genus it works well for smaller yards and landscapes and tolerates slightly drier conditions. It can also be cut back in the fall if size becomes an issue. This species is dioecious, needing a male and female to produce seed, having one will keep it from becoming weedy in the garden. Use in a rain garden, erosion control, or a border. Deer and black walnut tolerate.
