- » Deciduous conifer
Bald Cypress is a long‑lived, deciduous, cone‑bearing conifer with a strong pyramidal habit. Known as one of the longest‑living tree species in the world, its growth rings preserve centuries of climate history. The exfoliating reddish‑brown bark adds year‑round visual interest. This species is famously tolerant of flooded or saturated soils, often developing distinctive “knees” that help stabilize the tree in wet conditions. In drier sites, these knees are far less pronounced. Bald Cypress supports 17 species of moths and butterflies, and its seeds provide food for several gamebirds, adding meaningful wildlife value. Fall color ranges from bronze to rich reddish tones, creating a striking seasonal display. Landscape Uses • Rain gardens and bioswales • Specimen or focal tree • Urban forest plantings • Large residential or commercial landscapes
