  • Additional Details

Blooms June - August

  • »  Small white to pink flowers in summer
  • »  Clusters of glossy purple berries often persist to winter

The long arching branches are a great addition to the garden, adding texture and style. The small purple blooms are visited by many pollinators and later turn into showy beautiful bright purple berries. Native Americans used the roots and leaves for medicinal purposes. The berries will be foraged by songbirds and small mammals especially in cold difficult winters. This native Beautyberry will form berries right along the stem and the leaves will have a strong citronella lemon smell when crushed. Not to be confused with the non-native Asian beautyberry that the fruit will hang more like small grapes and the leaves will not have as strong of smell, if any, when crushed. When the leaves are crushed the fragrance acts as a mosquito repellant and the fruits are edible. Use in any well drained landscape from naturalized areas, butterfly and pollinator gardens, rain gardens and containers.
