American Basswood American Linden will grow to be a beautiful shade tree with large heart shaped leaves. It has amazing wildlife value including attracting lightning bugs and being a host plant for 140 moths and butterflies. It attracts pollinators, provides habitat, food and nesting sites for birds and small mammals. The fragrant pale-yellow flowers are edible and can be dried. Syrup can be made from the sap and the leaves can be used in salads. (Always seek the advice of a health professional before touching or eating any plant matter.) The nectar from the flowers is said to make outstanding tasty honey.
